Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Desks = rows × columns, where rows = floor(room_length ÷ (desk_depth + aisle)) and columns = floor(room_width ÷ (desk_width + aisle)). A standard classroom of 8 m × 6 m with 0.6 m × 0.5 m desks and 0.6 m aisles fits 7 rows × 6 columns = 42 desks. All dimensions must use the same unit.

Formula
Rows = floor(room_length / (desk_depth + aisle)) × Columns = floor(room_width / (desk_width + aisle))
How this is calculated

The calculator uses a rectangular grid model: each desk occupies a cell of (desk width + aisle gap) in the horizontal direction and (desk depth + aisle gap) in the depth direction. The number of columns is the whole number of cells that fit across the room width, and the number of rows is the whole number that fit along the room length. Multiplying rows by columns gives the maximum desk count for a straight-row layout.

This is a conservative model — it assumes a uniform gap on all sides of every desk, which is simpler to set out in practice and meets most fire-code aisle requirements. In real classrooms the front and side walls can sometimes allow desks to be placed flush with less clearance, gaining an extra row or column; the calculator's result is therefore a reliable minimum you can then fine-tune on site.

Typical minimum aisle widths for occupied rooms range from 0.45 m (secondary circulation) to 0.9 m (primary exit routes). A gap of 0.6 m between desk edges is a common default for classroom rows. The desk-area utilisation figure shows what fraction of the total floor area is actually covered by desk surfaces — values of 15–35% are typical for well-spaced classrooms.

Frequently asked questions

No — it fills the full room dimensions entered. Subtract a suitable teacher area (typically 1.5–2 m depth at the front) from the room length before calculating to reserve that space.

Requirements vary by country and building type. In many jurisdictions, 0.6 m (24 inches) between desk edges is the minimum for between-row aisles, with at least 0.9 m (36 inches) for main circulation aisles at the sides or ends. Always verify with your local fire and accessibility regulations.

Yes — enter all dimensions in the same unit (feet, inches, etc.) and the result is the same regardless of unit, because the formula is purely a ratio. Just be consistent: if you use feet for the room, use feet for the desk and aisle too.
