How does this calculator work?
Cost per use equals the purchase price minus any resale value, divided by total uses (uses per week times weeks owned). It spreads a purchase across its life so you can judge value for money: frequently used items cost little per use, while rarely used ones stay expensive even when cheap to buy.
Formula
How this is calculated
Enter the purchase price you paid, plus any resale or leftover value you expect to recover later (this is optional and defaults to 0). The net cost is the price minus that resale value, representing what the item truly costs you over its life.
Next, enter how many times you use the item per week and how many weeks you own it. Multiplying these gives the total number of uses. To avoid dividing by zero, total uses is forced to be at least 1. The net cost is then divided by the total uses to give the cost per use.
This spreads a one-time purchase across its useful life, making it easy to compare a cheap item you rarely use against a pricier item you use constantly. All money values share the same currency, and the result is in that currency per use.
Frequently asked questions
If you can sell the item later or reuse part of it, that value reduces your true cost. Subtracting it gives a fairer cost per use; leave it at 0 if it has no leftover value.
Lower uses per week or fewer weeks owned raise the cost per use, revealing that rarely-used items are often more expensive per use than their sticker price suggests.
Dividing by zero is undefined, so the calculator floors total uses at 1. This means a brand-new item shows its full net cost as the cost of a single use.
