How does this calculator work?

How this is calculated

A crosswind is the component of wind that blows perpendicular to the runway centreline. It makes aircraft drift sideways during takeoff and landing, requiring a crab angle or wing-low technique to stay on the centreline. Every aircraft has a demonstrated crosswind limit in its Pilot Operating Handbook (POH); exceeding it is a go-around or divert situation.

To compute the crosswind component, find the angle (Δ) between the wind direction and the runway heading. For example, if wind is from 270° and the runway heading is 240°, Δ = 30°. The crosswind component is wind speed × sin(30°) = 0.5 × wind speed. The headwind component is wind speed × cos(30°) = 0.866 × wind speed. If the wind comes from behind (the angle is more than 90°), the headwind component is negative — that means a tailwind, which extends the landing roll and shortens the climb-out distance.

Wind direction in aviation is always the direction the wind is FROM, given in degrees magnetic on METAR reports. Runway numbers are the magnetic heading divided by 10 (runway 24 = 240° magnetic). This calculator uses degrees as entered — ensure both the wind direction and runway heading use the same reference (magnetic or true) for accuracy.

Frequently asked questions

A METAR wind entry like "27015KT" means wind from 270° at 15 knots. Enter 270 as the wind direction and 15 as the wind speed. If it shows gusts (e.g. 27015G22KT), also check the crosswind at the gust speed (22 kt) — the highest crosswind in the landing sequence is what matters.

Most light single-engine aircraft (Cessna 172, Piper Cherokee) have demonstrated crosswind limits of 12–17 knots. Larger aircraft and turboprops may handle 20–30 knots. Check your specific aircraft's POH for the demonstrated crosswind component — the actual limit may be set lower by operator or insurer.

Yes. When the wind angle relative to the runway exceeds 90°, the headwind component becomes a tailwind. The crosswind component is still the sine of the angle. A pure tailwind (180° relative) has maximum tailwind and zero crosswind, but tailwinds are always operationally significant for takeoff and landing distance.
