Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

The volume of a cube is V = s³ — the side length multiplied by itself three times. A cube with side 4 units has volume 64 cubic units. Enter the side length above to get the volume, surface area and space diagonal all at once.

Formula
V = s³ • Surface area = 6s² • Space diagonal = s√3
How this is calculated

The volume of a cube is the simplest volume formula in geometry: side length cubed, or s³. Because all three dimensions of a cube are identical, V = s × s × s. This applies in every unit system — if s is in centimetres, V is in cm³; if s is in inches, V is in in³; if s is in metres, V is in m³.

The calculator also shows the total surface area (6s², the sum of six identical square faces) and the space diagonal (s√3, the longest interior line from corner to corner), so you can read off all the key properties of the cube without switching tools.

To reverse the calculation — finding the side length from a known volume — take the cube root: s = V^(1/3). Most scientific calculators have a cube-root button (∛), or you can use the exponent (1/3).

Frequently asked questions

V = s³, where s is the side length. Multiply the side length by itself three times. For example, a cube with side 3 cm has volume 3³ = 27 cm³.

Take the cube root: s = ∛V. If the volume is 64 cm³, then s = ∛64 = 4 cm. Enter the side length directly in this calculator; for the reverse direction, use a cube-root calculator.

A cube is a special cuboid where all three dimensions are equal. Cuboid volume is length × width × height; for a cube that simplifies to s × s × s = s³. A general cuboid with unequal dimensions cannot use the s³ shortcut.
