Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Cubic yards = (Length × Width × Depth) ÷ 27, where all dimensions are in feet. Enter your project dimensions and the calculator divides the cubic-foot result by 27. One cubic yard = 27 ft³ = 46,656 in³ = 0.7646 m³. Used when ordering concrete, mulch, topsoil or gravel.

Formula
Cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft) ÷ 27
How this is calculated

A cubic yard is the volume of a cube that measures 3 feet on each side, so 1 yd³ = 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 ft³. To find the volume of a rectangular space in cubic yards, multiply its length, width and depth — all measured in feet — and then divide by 27. If any dimension is in inches, divide it by 12 to convert to feet before multiplying.

Cubic yards are the standard ordering unit in the United States for bulk landscaping and construction materials: concrete, fill dirt, topsoil, compost, mulch, gravel and crushed stone. Suppliers price by the cubic yard, so an accurate calculation prevents both under-ordering and costly excess. For irregularly shaped areas, break the space into rectangular sections, calculate each separately, and add the results.

The calculator also reports the equivalent in cubic feet (× 27), cubic inches (× 46,656) and cubic meters (× 0.7646), so you can cross-check against other tools or material data sheets.

Frequently asked questions

One cubic yard equals exactly 27 cubic feet, because 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft = 27 ft³. Divide your cubic-foot result by 27 to get cubic yards.

Divide the inches by 12 to get feet. For example, a 4-inch-deep layer is 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft. Enter that decimal value in the Depth field.

Multiply slab length × width × thickness (all in feet) and divide by 27. Add 10% as a wastage buffer. For example, a 10 ft × 10 ft slab at 4 in thick = 10 × 10 × 0.333 ÷ 27 ≈ 1.23 yd³; order about 1.35 yd³.
