How this is calculated
A cubic yard is the volume of a cube that measures 3 feet on each side, so 1 yd³ = 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 ft³. To find the volume of a rectangular space in cubic yards, multiply its length, width and depth — all measured in feet — and then divide by 27. If any dimension is in inches, divide it by 12 to convert to feet before multiplying.

Suppliers price by the cubic yard, so an accurate calculation prevents both under-ordering and costly excess. Divide the inches by 12 to get feet. For example, a 4-inch-deep layer is 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft. Enter that decimal value in the Depth field.
Multiply slab length × width × thickness (all in feet) and divide by 27. Add 10% as a wastage buffer. For example, a 10 ft × 10 ft slab at 4 in thick = 10 × 10 × 0.333 ÷ 27 ≈ 1.23 yd³; order about 1.35 yd³.
