How this is calculated

Cycle time is the average time needed to complete one unit of work: divide the total available production time by the number of units finished in that period. If a shift runs 480 minutes and 60 widgets are made, the cycle time is 8 minutes per widget. This tells you the current capacity of the process.

Takt time is the heartbeat set by customer demand: divide the same available time by the number of units the customer requires. If the customer needs 50 per shift: 480 ÷ 50 = 9.6 minutes per unit. Comparing cycle time with takt time reveals the balance between what the process can produce and what the market actually wants. A cycle time shorter than takt time means the process is over-producing (or has spare capacity); longer means it cannot meet demand.

Throughput rate converts units per shift into units per hour for rate planning. These metrics assume a steady, single-station process; multi-step or bottleneck-constrained systems (modelled by Theory of Constraints) need additional analysis such as value stream mapping.
