Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Reading time equals word count divided by reading speed in words per minute. At the default 238 WPM silent rate, divide your words by 238 for minutes. Reading aloud (183 WPM) and listening (150 WPM) take longer. Paste text to count words automatically, then read the estimated minutes.

Formula
Reading time (min) = Word count ÷ Reading speed (WPM)
How this is calculated

Reading time is a simple ratio: divide the number of words by your reading speed in words per minute (WPM). You can either type a word count directly or paste your text, in which case the word count is computed as the number of whitespace-separated tokens. The reading speed input controls the main estimate; the default of 238 WPM reflects the average adult silent reading rate.

The calculator also reports two extra estimates using fixed reference speeds: reading aloud at 183 WPM and listening (for example, to an audiobook or text-to-speech) at 150 WPM. These are slower than silent reading because speaking and comprehension when listening take more time per word. All times are reported in minutes.

The AreaCurve shows how reading time changes across a range of speeds from 100 to 400 WPM, so you can see how a faster or slower pace affects the total. Edge cases: a reading speed of zero or below is invalid (division by zero), and a negative word count is rejected. These are estimates only — actual time varies with text difficulty, vocabulary, and reader familiarity.

Frequently asked questions

Average adult silent reading speed is around 238 words per minute. Reading aloud is slower, roughly 183 WPM, and comfortable listening is about 150 WPM.

When you paste text, the word count is the number of whitespace-separated tokens (words separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks). This pasted count overrides the manual word-count field.

Speaking each word and processing speech take more time than scanning text silently, so aloud (183 WPM) and listening (150 WPM) rates produce longer durations than silent reading.
