How does this calculator work?

Download time equals the file size in bits divided by your speed in bits per second. Convert the file to bits (bytes × 8), convert speed to bits/s (Mbps × 1,000,000 or MB/s × 8,000,000), then divide. The result is shown in seconds and as a clean hh:mm:ss best-case estimate before overhead.

How this is calculated

Enter the file size and pick its unit (MB or GB), then enter your connection speed and its unit (Mbps or MB/s). The file size is converted to bits: bytes are found from the chosen unit, then multiplied by 8 because there are 8 bits in a byte.

The unit base toggle controls how many bytes are in a megabyte or gigabyte. Decimal (used on most storage and ISP labels) treats 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes and 1 GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes. Binary (often shown by operating systems) treats 1 MB as 1,048,576 bytes (2^20) and 1 GB as 1,073,741,824 bytes (2^30).

Speed is converted to bits per second: Mbps means megabits per second (×1,000,000), while MB/s means megabytes per second (×8,000,000, since each byte is 8 bits). Dividing total bits by bits per second gives the time in seconds, which is then split into hours, minutes, and seconds. This is a theoretical best case; real downloads are slower due to protocol overhead, latency, server limits, and shared bandwidth.

This is the theoretical maximum. Real transfers lose speed to TCP/HTTP overhead, latency, server throttling, Wi-Fi interference, and bandwidth shared with other devices, so expect roughly 10-30% longer in practice.

Mbps is megabits per second and MB/s is megabytes per second. Because one byte equals 8 bits, a 80 Mbps connection delivers only about 10 MB/s.

Use decimal to match the size printed on storage devices and most download pages. Use binary if you are matching the size your operating system reports for the file.
