Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Enter any two of distance, time, pace or speed and this calculator solves the rest using speed = distance / time and pace = time / distance. It converts freely between km and miles (1 mi = 1.60934 km) so you can plan runs, rides or walks and compare min/km with min/mi at a glance.

Formula
speed = distance / time; pace = time / distance; time = distance × pace; distance = time / pace
How this is calculated

Distance (d), time (t), pace (p) and speed (v) are linked by two simple relationships: pace is the time spent per unit of distance (p = t / d), while speed is distance covered per unit of time (v = d / t). Pace and speed are reciprocals of each other once scaled, so v = 60 / p when pace is in minutes per unit and speed in units per hour. You only need any two of the four quantities; the calculator propagates the known values to fill in the missing ones — for example time = distance × pace, or distance = time × speed / 60.

Time is entered in minutes, pace in minutes per kilometer or per mile, and speed in km/h or mph, all matching the chosen distance unit. Unit conversion uses the exact factor 1 mile = 1.60934 km, so a pace in min/km is multiplied by 1.60934 to get min/mi (a mile takes longer than a kilometer), while a km/h speed is divided by the same factor to get mph.

The inputs must be physically consistent and positive: distance and time greater than zero, no division by zero. If you supply only pace and speed (which carry no length information) the problem is under-determined and no distance or time can be found. The chart plots distance against time as a straight line whose slope equals your speed, with a marker at your finishing point.

Frequently asked questions

If pace is in minutes per kilometer, speed in km/h equals 60 divided by the pace. For example, a 5 min/km pace is 60 / 5 = 12 km/h. The same rule applies for min/mi and mph.

A mile is longer than a kilometer (1 mi = 1.60934 km), so it takes more minutes to cover one mile than one kilometer at the same effort. Multiply min/km by 1.60934 to get min/mi.

Any two that include a length or time, such as distance and time, distance and pace, or time and speed. Entering only pace and speed cannot fix an actual distance or time.
