How this is calculated

Enter the number of characters you typed, the time you spent (in seconds), and the number of uncorrected errors. Typing tests use a standardized "word" of 5 characters (including spaces), so dividing the character count by 5 converts raw keystrokes into comparable words regardless of how long the actual words were. Time is converted from seconds to minutes by dividing by 60.

Gross WPM is the standardized word count divided by the elapsed minutes — it reflects raw speed without penalising mistakes. Net WPM subtracts an error penalty of one word per uncorrected error per minute (errors ÷ minutes), giving a realistic measure of usable speed. Net WPM is floored at zero so a very error-prone test never shows a negative score. Accuracy compares correct words to total words: each uncorrected error is treated as one wrong standardized word, so accuracy = (total − errors) ÷ total × 100.

Assumptions: a 5-character word standard, errors that remain uncorrected at the end of the test, and a time greater than zero (required to avoid dividing by zero). The RangeMeter places your net WPM into skill bands — roughly under 20 beginner, 20–40 average, 40–70 fast, and above 70 professional.
