How does this calculator work?
To find drywall sheets, compute total area as perimeter × wall height plus the ceiling (length × width), add 10% for waste, then divide by one sheet's area (a 4 × 8 ft sheet covers about 2.97 m²) and round up. It also estimates about 32 screws per sheet, 0.16 kg of joint compound and 0.45 m of tape per square metre.

How this is calculated
Enter the room length, width and wall height in metres, choose a sheet size, and decide whether to cover the ceiling. The calculator finds the wall area as the room perimeter (2 × (length + width)) multiplied by the wall height, then adds the ceiling area (length × width) when the ceiling is included.
The total area is increased by a 10% waste allowance to cover offcuts, mistakes and around openings, then divided by the area of one sheet and rounded up. A standard 4 × 8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft (about 2.97 m²); 4 × 10 ft and 4 × 12 ft sheets are also offered. Screws are estimated at about 32 per sheet, joint compound (mud) at roughly 0.16 kg per m² of board, and paper tape at about 0.45 m per m².
These are planning estimates and do not deduct doors and windows, so they err on the safe side. Real consumption varies with stud spacing, the number of coats, butt joints and your finishing technique, so buy a little extra and round up at the store.
Frequently asked questions
No. To stay on the safe side the area is calculated for full walls and a 10% waste factor is added. For very large openings you can reduce the room dimensions slightly, but most builders still buy the full count.
About 32 screws per 4 × 8 ft sheet is typical for walls with studs at standard spacing. Ceilings or tighter screw patterns can use more, so the figure is a reasonable average.
This tool estimates roughly 0.16 kg of joint compound and 0.45 m of tape per square metre of board, which covers taping and a couple of finishing coats. Heavy textures or extra coats will increase usage.
