How does this calculator work?
Florida uses the federal FLSA: non-exempt employees earn 1.5× for hours over 40 per workweek. Total pay = (min(hours,40) × rate) + (max(hours−40,0) × rate × 1.5). Florida minimum wage rises to $14/hr Sep 2025 and $15/hr Sep 2026 under Amendment 2 — adjust the rate field to match your year.
Formula
How this is calculated
Florida has no state overtime law; it relies entirely on the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The FLSA requires covered, non-exempt employees to receive at least 1.5 times their regular rate for every hour worked beyond 40 in a single workweek. Overtime is calculated on a weekly basis — working long days does not trigger overtime unless the weekly total exceeds 40 hours.
This calculator splits your total hours into regular (up to the threshold, default 40) and overtime (above it). Regular pay is hours × rate; overtime pay is overtime hours × rate × multiplier (default 1.5). The effective hourly rate — total pay divided by total hours — shows the blended average for the week. The FractionBar visualises the split between regular and overtime earnings at a glance.
Note that "exempt" employees — typically salaried professionals, managers, and outside salespeople earning above the FLSA salary threshold ($684/week as of 2024) — are generally not entitled to overtime. Florida's minimum wage was $13/hr through August 2025, rises to $14/hr in September 2025 under Amendment 2 (2020 ballot initiative), and will reach $15/hr in September 2026. All figures here are 2025 estimates; verify your classification and applicable rates with HR or the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
Frequently asked questions
No. Florida has no state overtime statute. The federal FLSA applies: non-exempt hourly workers earn 1.5× their regular rate for hours over 40 per workweek. Florida only adds a higher minimum wage than the federal floor.
Most hourly workers and some salaried employees are covered ("non-exempt") under FLSA. Employees classified as exempt — typically salaried professionals, managers, or outside salespeople earning above the FLSA salary threshold — are not entitled to overtime. Check with your HR department or the US Department of Labor if you are unsure.
Overtime under FLSA is calculated on a weekly basis over a fixed seven-day workweek. Working 10 hours in one day does not automatically trigger overtime if the weekly total stays at or below 40 hours.
