How does this calculator work?
Total annual = (regular rate × reg. hours + regular rate × OT multiplier × OT hours) × weeks/year. At $25/h with 5 OT hours/week at 1.5×: weekly = $1,000 + $187.50 = $1,187.50; annual = $61,750 gross — $9,750 more than without overtime.
Formula
How this is calculated
Overtime pay is calculated at a premium over the regular rate. In the United States, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires non-exempt employees to receive at least 1.5× their regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 per week — commonly called "time-and-a-half". Some employers or union agreements pay double-time (2×) for Sundays, holidays or hours beyond a daily threshold. Enter the multiplier that applies to your situation.
The weekly gross is the sum of regular pay (regular rate × regular hours) plus overtime pay (regular rate × multiplier × overtime hours). Multiplying the weekly total by the weeks worked per year gives the annual gross. Monthly is annual ÷ 12; bi-weekly is two weeks of total pay.
The effective hourly rate shows what you are averaging per hour across regular and overtime hours — this is useful for comparing offers. All figures are pre-tax gross amounts. Overtime rules differ significantly by country and by state/province within a country; this calculator applies the multiplier you enter regardless of jurisdiction, so verify the legal minimum in your location.
Frequently asked questions
Overtime pay = regular rate × overtime multiplier × overtime hours. In the US (FLSA), the multiplier is at least 1.5 for hours over 40 per week. Some agreements use 2.0 for double time on certain days.
Yes in gross terms — overtime pay adds to total earnings. However, it may push you into a higher tax bracket, and the after-tax gain is usually less than the gross. The calculator shows gross only; apply your tax rate to estimate take-home.
It is total weekly pay (regular + overtime) divided by total hours worked. It tells you the average rate per hour when overtime is included — useful for comparing a job with overtime to one at a flat higher rate.
