Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Multiply litres by 100 to get centilitres (1 L = 100 cL exactly). Multiply by 1000 for millilitres. For US fluid ounces, multiply by 33.814; for US cups, multiply by 4.227. All metric conversions are exact; US imperial ones use standard defined ratios.

Formula
cL = L × 100 • mL = L × 1000
How this is calculated

The litre (L) and centilitre (cL) are both metric units of volume. The prefix "centi-" means one-hundredth, so 1 cL is exactly 0.01 L, and therefore 1 L = 100 cL. This is a fixed, exact conversion with no approximation.

Millilitres follow the same pattern: "milli-" means one-thousandth, so 1 L = 1000 mL, and 1 cL = 10 mL. These three units — litre, centilitre, and millilitre — are the backbone of metric volume measurement in cooking, medicine, and everyday packaging.

The imperial conversions use standard internationally agreed ratios: 1 L = 33.8140 US fluid ounces = 4.22675 US cups = 67.6280 US tablespoons. Note that US fluid ounces differ from imperial (UK) fluid ounces (1 L = 35.1951 UK fl oz). This calculator uses the US definition throughout.

Frequently asked questions

Exactly 100 cL = 1 L. The "centi" prefix means one-hundredth, so a centilitre is one-hundredth of a litre, and a litre is one hundred centilitres.

Centilitres are common in European food and wine labelling — a standard wine glass is often 15–25 cL, a small spirits measure is 3–5 cL, and beverage cans frequently show their volume in cL. They are also used in recipe measurements in some countries.

1 cL = 10 mL. Since 1 L = 100 cL and 1 L = 1000 mL, each centilitre equals 1000 ÷ 100 = 10 millilitres.
