This is because a cup is defined as exactly half a pint in both measurement traditions. Despite this shared ratio, the actual volumes differ — a US cup is 236.588 mL while an Imperial cup is 284.131 mL — because the US pint (473.176 mL) and Imperial pint (568.261 mL) have different absolute sizes.
For US measurements, one pint also equals 16 US fluid ounces, 32 tablespoons, 96 teaspoons, half a quart, and one eighth of a gallon. These subsidiary conversions are shown in the table above. The tablespoon and teaspoon conversions are specific to the US system; Imperial cooking traditionally uses fluid ounces rather than tablespoons as the sub-cup unit.
