A square yard is a unit of area equal to a square with sides of exactly one yard (3 feet / 36 inches / 0.9144 metres). Because area scales as the square of a linear unit, 1 yard = 3 feet means 1 square yard = 9 square feet — not 3. Similarly, 1 yard = 0.9144 m means 1 yd² = 0.9144² ≈ 0.8361 m².
