How does this calculator work?
Area in square yards = length × width × conversion factor (1 ft² = 1/9 yd², 1 m² ≈ 1.196 yd²). Multiply length by width in feet and divide by 9, or enter any unit above for an automatic conversion. One square yard = 9 square feet = 0.836 square meters.
Formula
How this is calculated
Square yards measure two-dimensional area: the result of multiplying a length by a width, both in yards. If your dimensions are in a different unit, the calculator applies a fixed conversion factor before multiplying: 1 ft = 1/3 yd so 1 ft² = 1/9 yd²; 1 m = 1/0.9144 yd so 1 m² = 1/0.83612736 yd²; 1 inch = 1/36 yd so 1 in² = 1/1 296 yd².
The math is: area in yd² = length × width × (yd² per input unit). The conversion factors are internationally fixed exact ratios, not approximations, so the result is exact to floating-point precision. Secondary conversions back to ft², m², in² and cm² multiply the yd² result by the corresponding exact factor (1 yd² = 9 ft², 1 yd² = 0.83612736 m², 1 yd² = 1 296 in²).
This calculator assumes a flat, rectangular space. For irregularly shaped rooms — L-shapes, bay windows, closets — split the space into rectangles, compute each separately, and add the areas. For carpet or flooring purposes, also add a waste allowance (typically 5–10 %) to the total.
Frequently asked questions
Divide the number of square feet by 9. One square yard equals exactly 9 square feet (since 1 yard = 3 feet and area scales as the square: 3² = 9). For example, 180 ft² ÷ 9 = 20 yd².
Multiply length (ft) × width (ft) to get square feet, then divide by 9. Or divide each dimension by 3 first to convert to yards, then multiply: (length ÷ 3) × (width ÷ 3) = same result.
Carpet, turf, and some flooring products are traditionally sold by the square yard in countries that use imperial units. Even as metric grows, many carpet rolls are cut to widths in yards, so square yards remain the natural unit for ordering.
