How this is calculated

Torque measures rotational force: a force applied at a perpendicular distance from a pivot, so its dimensions are force times length. Every unit here is defined by how many newton-meters (Nm), the SI base unit, it represents. The converter first multiplies your input by the source unit's factor to reach Nm, then divides by the target unit's factor to land in the unit you want.

The factors are exact physical definitions: 1 kNm = 1000 Nm, 1 pound-force-foot = 1.355818 Nm (1 lbf times 0.3048 m), 1 pound-force-inch = 0.112985 Nm (one twelfth of a lbf-ft), and 1 kilogram-force-meter = 9.80665 Nm (using standard gravity g = 9.80665 m/s^2). So Nm to lbf-ft means dividing by 1.355818.

Results are rounded for display, so reversing a conversion may differ slightly in the last digits. The calculation is purely a unit relabeling and assumes torque only; it does not account for lever-arm angle, efficiency, or the distinction between applied and reaction torque.

About this calculator

Torque is a rotational force — the twisting effect produced by a force applied at a distance from a pivot. The SI unit is the newton-meter (Nm). In the US, torque (such as engine output or bolt tightening specs) is often given in pound-feet (lbf-ft) or pound-inches (lbf-in).

This converter uses the newton-meter as its base unit. One pound-foot equals about 1.3558 Nm, one pound-inch equals about 0.113 Nm, and one kilogram-force-meter equals 9.80665 Nm. It is ideal for mechanics, engine specs and fastener torque settings.

Frequently asked questions

One pound-foot equals approximately 1.3558 newton-meters.

Divide newton-meters by 1.3558 (or multiply by about 0.7376) to get pound-feet.

A pound-foot is 12 times a pound-inch, since there are 12 inches in a foot.
