Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Mount the TV centre at your seated eye level (typically 42 in / 107 cm). TV screen height ≈ diagonal × 0.49 (for 16:9). Bottom of TV = eye level − screen height / 2. For HD, sit 1.5–2.5× the diagonal away; for 4K, 1–1.5×. Use a tilting bracket if mounting above eye level.

Formula
TV height (in) = diagonal × 9 / √337 • TV centre from floor = seated eye level • TV bottom = eye level − TV height / 2
How this is calculated

The most widely recommended mounting guideline is to position the centre of the TV screen at your seated eye level. This minimises neck tilt, reduces eye strain during long viewing sessions and places the visual "sweet spot" of the picture directly in your line of sight. Seated eye level varies by person and chair height but is typically 38–45 inches (97–114 cm) from the floor for standard sofas and recliners; the default of 42 inches is a common middle estimate.

The TV's physical screen height is derived from the advertised diagonal and the 16:9 aspect ratio: height = diagonal × 9 / √(16² + 9²) ≈ diagonal × 0.49. A 55-inch TV has a screen height of roughly 27 inches. Placing the centre at eye level (42 inches) puts the bottom at about 28–29 inches and the top at 55–56 inches from the floor — a comfortable range for most living rooms. The VESA wall-bracket hole pattern is usually centred on the TV, so the bracket centre aligns with the recommended TV centre height.

Viewing distance also affects comfort: for HD (1080p) content, 1.5–2.5 times the diagonal is commonly recommended; for 4K, 1–1.5 times the diagonal. Mounting a TV higher than eye level (e.g., above a fireplace) creates downward neck tilt that becomes fatiguing over time; if you must mount high, a tilting bracket that angles the screen downward partially compensates.

Frequently asked questions

Above-fireplace mounting is very common but is rarely the ergonomically ideal position — it places the screen well above seated eye level, causing sustained upward neck tilt and eye strain. If you must mount there, choose a full-motion or tilting bracket to angle the screen downward, and keep viewing sessions shorter than you otherwise would.

VESA stands for Video Electronics Standards Association. It specifies the spacing (in mm) of the four bolt holes on the back of the TV that the wall bracket attaches to. The VESA holes are centred on most TVs, so the bracket's centre point aligns with the TV's centre — and therefore with your recommended mount height. Check your TV's spec sheet for its VESA pattern before buying a bracket.

Sit in your usual viewing chair or sofa in the position you normally use when watching TV. Have someone measure the height from the floor to the bridge of your nose (or the midpoint between your pupils). That measurement is your seated eye level — the ideal height for the TV centre. It typically falls between 38 and 45 inches for standard sofas.
