Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Net coverage per roll = roll width × (roll length − pattern repeat). Rolls needed = ⌈(wall area ÷ net coverage) × (1 + waste %)⌉. Standard rolls (0.53 m × 10.05 m, no repeat) cover about 5.3 m² net. A 40 m² room at 10 % waste needs approximately 8 rolls.

Formula
Rolls = ⌈(wall area ÷ net coverage per roll) × (1 + waste %)⌉ • net coverage = roll width × (roll length − pattern repeat)
How this is calculated

Unlike a room-dimension calculator that works from length, width and height, this tool takes the total wall area in square metres or square feet directly — useful when you have already measured the walls or are working from an architect's drawing. Enter the area after subtracting large openings (doors and windows) if you want a tighter estimate, or include them for a built-in buffer.

Net coverage per roll is the roll width multiplied by the roll length minus the pattern repeat. The pattern repeat is the vertical distance after which a design motif restarts; every drop must be offset by up to one full repeat so the print aligns with adjacent strips, wasting that length from each roll. A plain or random-match paper has zero repeat and wastes nothing from alignment. Dividing the wall area by the net coverage gives the ideal number of rolls; the waste percentage adds a margin for cutting, trimming, mis-cuts and off-cuts at corners.

Standard European wallpaper rolls are 0.53 m wide and 10.05 m long; North American double rolls are often 0.53 m × 15.2 m. Always buy all rolls from the same print batch — colour can shift slightly between batches — and keep at least one roll unopened for future touch-ups.

Frequently asked questions

Leaving them in gives a useful safety buffer and means you end up with a spare roll for future repairs. Subtracting them gives a leaner, cheaper estimate. If your room has several large windows or a wide doorway, subtract their area and rely on the waste percentage for the rest.

The pattern repeat is printed on the wallpaper packaging or listed in the product specification. Plain and linen-texture papers have zero repeat. Small repeats of 10–15 cm waste little material; large decorative repeats of 50–64 cm can add 15–25 % extra rolls. Set repeat to 0 for a random-match paper.

Ten percent is standard for a straightforward room with small or no pattern repeat. Increase to 15–20 % for complex rooms with many angles, alcoves, or a large pattern repeat. A first-time decorator would be wise to add 15–20 % to cover mistakes.
