Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Gross weekly pay = (hourly rate × regular hours) + (hourly rate × overtime multiplier × overtime hours). Standard US overtime is 1.5× for hours above 40 per week (FLSA 2024), but the multiplier is editable. All results are gross before tax. The effective hourly rate blends regular and overtime hours together.

Formula
Regular pay = hourly rate × regular hours • Overtime pay = hourly rate × multiplier × overtime hours • Gross weekly pay = regular pay + overtime pay
How this is calculated

Regular pay is your hourly rate multiplied by the hours you work at the standard rate. Most employment contracts define a standard week (commonly 40 hours in the United States, 37.5–40 hours in many European countries) — any hours worked up to that limit are paid at the base rate.

Overtime pay applies to hours beyond the standard week and is computed as hourly rate × overtime multiplier × overtime hours. The default multiplier of 1.5 reflects the US Fair Labor Standards Act "time-and-a-half" requirement for non-exempt employees working over 40 hours per week (2024). Some employers or collective agreements use 2.0× (double time) for weekend or holiday work. This calculator lets you set any multiplier ≥ 1 — check your employment contract or local law for the applicable rate.

All results are gross pay before income tax, social security, pension contributions or any other deductions. The effective hourly rate — total gross pay divided by total hours — shows what you earn per hour when overtime is blended in; it is always between the base rate and the overtime rate.

Frequently asked questions

Under the Federal FLSA (2024), most non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5× their regular hourly rate for every hour over 40 in a workweek. Some states (e.g. California) have additional rules requiring daily overtime after 8 hours. Always confirm with your specific state rules and employment contract.

All figures are gross pay before income tax, social security, pension and other payroll deductions. Your take-home (net) pay will be lower; use a net pay or tax calculator to estimate deductions for your jurisdiction.

Set overtime hours to 0. The overtime pay will be zero and the gross weekly pay equals your regular pay alone. The effective hourly rate will then equal your base hourly rate.
