How does this calculator work?
Divide your word count by elapsed time in minutes to get WPM. Average typists reach ~40 WPM, average adult readers ~238 WPM silently, and average speakers ~130 WPM. Paste text to auto-count words, then enter the time — characters per minute (WPM × 5) is also shown.
Formula
How this is calculated
Words per minute is calculated by dividing the total number of words by the number of minutes elapsed. You can enter the word count directly, or paste your text to let the calculator count whitespace-separated tokens automatically. The time field accepts decimal values — for example 90 seconds equals 1.5 minutes.
Characters per minute (CPM) uses the convention that an average English word is five characters long, so CPM ≈ WPM × 5. This is approximate; actual CPM depends on word length in the specific text.
The benchmark comparison shows your speed relative to a population average for the selected mode: 40 WPM for an average typist, 238 WPM for average adult silent reading, or 130 WPM for an average speaker. These are commonly cited averages — individual speeds vary widely with practice, language, and content type.
Frequently asked questions
The average typist manages around 40 WPM. Touch-typists without formal training often reach 50–70 WPM, professional typists regularly exceed 100 WPM, and competitive speed typists can reach 150 WPM or more.
Use a standardised passage. Type or read it, note the elapsed time, then enter word count and time here. For typing, net WPM subtracts an error penalty — most typing tests calculate this automatically before you record the number.
Average adult silent reading speed is approximately 238 words per minute, ranging roughly 200–300 WPM across studies. Reading aloud is slower at around 183 WPM, and audiobook listening around 150 WPM.
