How this is calculated

Network speeds are measured in megabits per second (Mbps), but file sizes are measured in megabytes (MB). Because one byte contains eight bits, you divide the Mbps speed by 8 to get the equivalent in megabytes per second: a 100 Mbps connection delivers a maximum of 12.5 MB/s. The download time then follows from dividing the file size in MB by the speed in MB/s.

This calculator uses decimal (SI) prefixes throughout, the same convention as ISPs: 1 GB = 1,000 MB = 1,000,000 KB. Real-world throughput is typically lower than the theoretical maximum because of protocol overhead, network congestion, server speed, and Wi-Fi contention. As a practical rule of thumb, expect 70–90% of the rated speed on a wired connection and 40–70% on Wi-Fi.

For context: streaming 4K video requires roughly 15–25 Mbps; a 1-hour 4K Netflix download is around 3 GB (at 2160p). A 50 GB game at 100 Mbps takes just over 1 hour.
