How this is calculated
Airline baggage policies set maximum weights for cabin (carry-on) and checked bags. Typical cabin limits range from 7 kg (budget carriers) to 12–15 kg (full-service airlines), while standard economy checked-bag limits are 20–23 kg with business class at 32 kg. Exceeding the limit incurs a per-kilogram surcharge payable at check-in — commonly EUR 10–25 per kg for budget airlines and higher on transatlantic routes.
This calculator computes the excess weight per bag (bag weight minus the limit, floored at zero) and multiplies by your number of bags and the fee rate to give an estimated charge. The fee per kilogram varies by airline, route and whether you paid for it in advance — pre-purchasing excess allowance online is typically 30–60 % cheaper than paying at the airport.
Note that many airlines also have size restrictions (total linear dimensions) and density limits — a bag can exceed size rules while still being under the weight limit, or vice versa. Always verify the current policy directly with your airline before travel, as limits and fees change regularly.

Most full-service airlines allow 23 kg (about 50 lb) per checked bag in economy class. Budget carriers often limit checked bags to 20 kg, while business class is typically 32 kg. Some carriers use piece-based allowances rather than weight (e.g., two bags regardless of weight up to a threshold).
Only if you have an allowance for two bags. Per-bag limits are applied to each bag individually — you cannot count a 30 kg bag as two 15 kg bags under a 20 kg limit. However, distributing items across multiple bags each within the limit is perfectly valid.
Use a luggage scale (a small hook scale you clip to the handle and lift). Alternatively, weigh yourself on bathroom scales, then weigh yourself holding the bag — the difference is the bag weight. Note that home scales can be off by 0.5–1 kg, so aim to be at least 1 kg under the limit as a buffer.
