How this is calculated

Parts per million (ppm) expresses how many grams of solute are present per million grams of solution: ppm = (mass of solute / mass of solution) × 1,000,000. It is a dimensionless mass-fraction unit, so the same definition underpins every related unit used here.

The calculator converts your input by first scaling it into ppm with the "From unit" factor, then scaling that ppm value out with the "To unit" factor. The fixed relationships are: 1 ppm = 1000 ppb, 1% (by mass) = 10,000 ppm, and for a dilute aqueous solution where the density is essentially 1.000 kg/L, 1 mg/L is approximately equal to 1 ppm. The mg/L ≈ ppm equivalence is an approximation that holds only for dilute water-based solutions near 25 °C; for concentrated solutions, non-aqueous solvents, or fluids whose density differs noticeably from 1 g/mL you must apply the actual solution density. Edge case: a non-numeric value yields no result, and very small or very large inputs are shown to six significant decimals.

Only for dilute aqueous solutions whose density is about 1.000 g/mL. For concentrated or non-water solutions you must divide mg/L by the solution density in g/mL to get ppm.

Divide ppm by 10,000. For example, 250 ppm equals 0.025% by mass, because 1% corresponds to 10,000 ppm.

They are both mass fractions; ppb is one thousand times finer. 1 ppm equals 1000 ppb, so multiply ppm by 1000 to obtain ppb.
