Pizza Calculator — How Many Pizzas to Order

Never run out of pizza — or order way too much. Enter the number of guests, how hungry they are, and the slice count per pizza. The calculator tells you exactly how many pizzas to order, total slices available and any leftovers.

Conas a oibríonn an t-áireamhán seo?

Multiply people × slices per person (2–5 depending on appetite), add a buffer %, then divide by slices per pizza and round up. For 8 people with a normal appetite and 8-slice pizzas: 8 × 3 = 24 slices → 3 pizzas. Add a 10% buffer → ⌈26.4 ÷ 8⌉ = 4 pizzas.

Foirmle
Slices needed = people × slices/person × (1 + buffer%) • Pizzas = ⌈Slices needed ÷ slices/pizza⌉
How this is calculated

The base calculation is simple: multiply the number of people by the expected slices per person (which depends on appetite). A "normal" appetite is typically 2–3 slices for a standard lunch and 3–4 slices for dinner or a hungry crowd. Add a percentage buffer to account for second helpings, children eating unpredictably, or unexpected guests.

The total slice requirement is then divided by the number of slices in each pizza, and the result is always rounded up — you cannot order a fraction of a pizza, and running short is far worse than having a couple of slices left over. The leftover count shows how much extra you will have, which is useful for judging whether to round down when the overage is very large.

Slice counts vary by pizza size: a personal pizza (about 6 in) usually has 4 slices, a medium (12 in) has 6–8 slices and a large (14–16 in) has 8–10 slices. Enter the actual slice count for the size you are ordering, or use the default of 8 for a typical large pizza.

Ceisteanna coitianta

A typical adult eats 2–3 slices at a meal, though hungry adults (especially at evening events) often eat 3–4. Children typically eat 1–2 slices. When in doubt, assume 3 slices per adult and 1–2 per child, then add a 10–15% buffer for good measure.

Larger pizzas almost always give more pizza per dollar. A 16-inch pizza has 4× the area of an 8-inch one, but rarely costs 4× as much. If your group can agree on toppings, ordering fewer large pizzas is usually more economical than many small ones.

Run the calculator twice — once for the adults (use "hungry" or "normal") and once for the children (use "light"). Add the two pizza counts together for the total. The calculator assumes a uniform appetite across the group, so splitting it by sub-group gives a more accurate result.
