How this is calculated

All typing-speed units measure the same underlying rate — how many characters (or keystrokes) pass in a given time — but scale to different time windows for readability. The base unit used here is characters per second (CPS). Every other unit converts through CPS by multiplying or dividing by the appropriate time factor: CPM = CPS × 60, KPH = CPS × 3,600, and WPM = CPM ÷ 5 (assuming an average of 5 characters per word, the standard used by most typing tests). Keystrokes per hour (KPH) is the same as characters per hour for single-key entries and is the preferred metric in data-entry and transcription roles.

The word-length assumption of 5 characters is a convention, not a precise measurement. In practice, average English word length is around 4.7 characters before the space, and the space itself is typically counted as one keystroke, putting the effective average at about 5. For languages with longer words (German, Finnish) WPM will understate raw speed; for shorter-word languages it will overstate it. If your typing test uses a different characters-per-word definition, use CPS or CPM instead to avoid this ambiguity.

A typical touch-typist reaches 60–80 WPM (5–6.7 CPS); professional typists and stenographers can exceed 120 WPM (10 CPS). Data-entry roles are often benchmarked in KPH: 8,000 KPH is roughly 2.2 CPS or 27 WPM, and 12,000 KPH is 3.3 CPS or 40 WPM.
