Cum funcționează acest calculator?

cos(θ) is the x-coordinate on the unit circle at angle θ, always between −1 and 1. It equals adjacent/hypotenuse in a right triangle. Input degrees: multiply by π/180 first. The function repeats every 360° (2π rad), is even (cos(−θ) = cos(θ)), and is zero at 90°, 270°, and every odd multiple of 90°.

Formulă
cos(θ) = adjacent ÷ hypotenuse (right triangle) • cos(θ) = Re(e^{iθ}) = (e^{iθ} + e^{−iθ}) / 2
How this is calculated

The cosine function maps an angle θ to the x-coordinate of the point on the unit circle at that angle. For a right triangle, cos(θ) equals the length of the adjacent side divided by the hypotenuse — but the function extends far beyond right triangles: cos is defined for all real numbers (and complex numbers), repeating with period 2π (360°).

When you enter an angle in degrees it is first converted to radians (θ_rad = θ° × π / 180) because the JavaScript Math functions — and all mathematical definitions — use radians. The cosine ranges from −1 to 1 inclusive, reaching +1 at 0°, 0 at 90°, −1 at 180°, 0 at 270°, and back to +1 at 360°.

The calculator also shows sine, tangent and cotangent for the same angle, since these are all derived from the same unit-circle point: sin(θ) is the y-coordinate, tan(θ) = sin(θ) / cos(θ), and cot(θ) = cos(θ) / sin(θ). Tangent is undefined when cos(θ) = 0 (at ±90°, ±270°, …) and cotangent is undefined when sin(θ) = 0 (at 0°, ±180°, …).

Întrebări frecvente

On the unit circle (radius = 1), the cosine of an angle θ is the horizontal (x) coordinate of the point reached after rotating counterclockwise from the positive x-axis by θ. In a right triangle, it is the ratio of the adjacent leg to the hypotenuse.

Cosine is an even function: cos(−θ) = cos(θ). Its graph is symmetric about the y-axis. Sine is odd (sin(−θ) = −sin(θ)), which is why cos(θ) = sin(90° − θ) — they are the same wave shifted by 90°.

Degrees split a full rotation into 360 equal parts by convention. Radians measure angle by the arc length on a unit circle: a full rotation is 2π ≈ 6.2832 radians. Scientific formulas (derivatives, series expansions) require radians; degrees are more intuitive for everyday geometry.
