APC Calculator — Average Propensity to Consume

The Average Propensity to Consume (APC) measures what share of disposable income a household or economy spends rather than saves. Enter income and total consumption expenditure to instantly see APC, APS, and the income split.

Как работает этот калькулятор?

APC = Consumption ÷ Disposable Income. If you earn $50,000 and spend $42,000, APC = 0.84 (84%) and APS = 0.16 (16%). Values above 1 mean you are spending more than you earn (dissaving). APS = 1 − APC always holds.

Формула
APC = C ÷ Y • APS = 1 − APC • Savings S = Y − C
How this is calculated

In Keynesian macroeconomics, every unit of disposable income (Y) is either consumed (C) or saved (S), so Y = C + S always holds. The Average Propensity to Consume divides total consumption by total income — if a household earns $50,000 and spends $42,000, APC = 0.84, meaning 84 cents of every dollar flows to spending. Its mirror, the Average Propensity to Save (APS = 1 − APC), tells how much is retained; the two always sum to exactly 1.

APC can legitimately exceed 1. When C > Y the household is "dissaving" — drawing on past savings or borrowing to fund current consumption. This is common during recessions, at low income levels where necessities absorb more than current earnings, or in retirement where people run down accumulated wealth. In aggregate, APC for high-income economies typically sits between 0.92 and 0.97 (personal saving rates of 3–8%).

Important limitations: this calculator takes a snapshot (single period) and uses aggregate totals, so it does not capture the Marginal Propensity to Consume (MPC) — the response to an extra dollar of income — nor does it model autonomous consumption (spending independent of income). For MPC and the Keynesian multiplier, you need changes in income and consumption across two periods.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

For most households APC falls between 0.85 and 0.97. In the US, the personal saving rate averages roughly 4–8%, implying an APC of 0.92–0.96. Lower-income households often have APC above 1 (dissaving) because necessities outweigh current earnings.

APC is the ratio of total consumption to total income (C/Y). MPC is the change in consumption per unit change in income (ΔC/ΔY). MPC describes the spending response to an extra dollar and is typically 0.6–0.9 — lower than APC. APC is a snapshot; MPC is a marginal concept.

No. Consumption (spending on goods and services) cannot be negative. APC can fall close to 0 if nearly all income is saved, and it can exceed 1 if consumption is funded by borrowing or drawing on past savings, but it cannot go below 0.
