How this is calculated

Gematria is a method of assigning numerical values to letters and summing them to obtain a single number for a word or phrase. Although the term originates in Hebrew tradition (where the Hebrew alphabet has canonical numerical assignments), English gematria applies similar rules to the Latin alphabet.

The most common English systems are: Simple (Ordinal) — A=1, B=2, ..., Z=26, giving a direct ordinal ranking; Reverse — A=26, B=25, ..., Z=1, the mirror image; and Reduced — values cycle through 1–9 (A=1, B=2, ..., I=9, then J=1, K=2, ..., R=9, S=1, ..., Z=8), a system used in many numerology traditions to reduce any value to a single digit before summing. All three are deterministic and require no external database.

This calculator counts only alphabetic characters (A–Z). Spaces, digits, and punctuation are ignored. Calculations are case-insensitive. The result is purely arithmetical and has no inherent mystical validity; gematria is primarily used in religious study, literary analysis, and recreational numerology. Different practitioners use different systems, so "the" gematria value of a word is always system-relative.
