Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Shift end time = start time + paid hours + unpaid break minutes. An 8-hour paid shift with a 30-minute unpaid lunch starting at 9:00 AM ends at 5:30 PM. Adjust for 6, 10 or 12-hour shifts and any break duration; overnight shifts are flagged "+1 day".

Formula
End time = Start time + Paid hours + Unpaid break minutes
How this is calculated

Enter your shift start time in 24-hour format (e.g. 9 for 9 AM, 14 for 2 PM), the paid shift length in hours and the total unpaid break duration in minutes. The calculator adds the paid hours and the break time to the start time to give the clock-out time.

Paid hours and unpaid break are treated separately: if you work an 8-hour paid shift with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break, you will be on site for 8.5 hours total but paid for only 8. Many workplaces require a 30-minute unpaid meal break after 5 consecutive hours, so the default is set to 30 minutes — adjust to zero if your break is paid or if local labour law differs.

Overnight shifts (shifts that cross midnight) are flagged with "+1 day" after the end time. All times use standard 12-hour AM/PM display for readability, but inputs use the 24-hour clock to avoid AM/PM ambiguity.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on your contract. In this calculator the break field is for unpaid break time — it is added to the shift length to give the total time on site, but it is not included in the paid hours. If your break is paid, leave the break field at zero and include it in the shift hours.

The calculator handles overnight shifts automatically. If the end time falls past midnight, the display shows "+1 day" next to the end time. The paid hours and total on-site time are still calculated correctly.

Yes — just change the "Paid shift length" field. Common shift lengths are 6, 8, 10 and 12 hours, but the calculator accepts any value from 0.5 to 24 hours.
