How does this calculator work?
Bulgarian net salary in 2026 = gross minus 13.78% social contributions (charged up to the 4,130 BGN monthly cap) minus a flat 10% income tax on the remainder — an effective deduction of about 22% for typical salaries. Results show in both leva and euro at the official fixed rate of 1.95583.
Formula
How this is calculated
Bulgaria runs one of the simplest payroll systems in the EU: a flat 10% personal income tax and a fixed employee share of social contributions — about 13.78% for standard employment, covering pension, health and unemployment insurance. Contributions are charged only up to the maximum monthly insurable income (4,130 BGN in 2026), so higher salaries pay a smaller effective contribution share.
The calculation order matters: social contributions come off the gross first, and the 10% tax applies to the remainder (the tax base). With the 2026 euro changeover, amounts can be entered in either currency; conversion uses the irrevocably fixed rate of 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN set for the adoption — banks and employers must use exactly this rate, so the calculator does too.
The result shows net pay in both currencies, the split between contributions and tax, and the effective total deduction rate — typically about 22% for salaries under the insurable cap, falling gradually above it. Self-employment, civil contracts (граждански договор) and second-category labour use different contribution rates that this standard-employment model does not cover.
Frequently asked questions
At the irrevocably fixed rate of 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN, set by the currency board and confirmed for the 2026 euro adoption. Employers, banks and shops must convert at exactly this rate — no spread or fee is allowed on the conversion itself.
The monthly ceiling above which no social contributions are due — 4,130 BGN in 2026. Someone earning 8,000 BGN pays contributions only on the first 4,130, but the 10% income tax still applies to the whole taxable remainder.
Yes — Bulgaria taxes employment income at a flat 10% regardless of amount, one of the lowest rates in the EU. Progressivity exists only through the social-contribution cap and family tax reliefs claimed at year end.
