How does this calculator work?

DPI equals image pixels divided by print size in inches; the smaller of the width and height value sets sharpness. For photo-quality prints target 300 DPI, or 150 DPI for larger prints viewed from a distance. To find pixels needed, multiply each print dimension in inches by your target DPI.

How this is calculated

DPI (dots per inch) describes how many image pixels are packed into each inch of a print. In "Find DPI" mode the calculator divides the image width in pixels by the print width in inches, does the same for height, and reports the lower of the two values — that is the effective resolution that limits sharpness. It also computes the largest print size that still meets your chosen reference DPI by dividing each pixel dimension by that DPI.

In "Find required pixels" mode the calculator multiplies each print dimension (inches) by the target DPI to give the minimum pixel count needed, plus the equivalent total pixels and megapixels for the camera or export you need.

As a rule of thumb, 300 DPI is considered photo quality for prints viewed at arm's length, while 150 DPI is acceptable for larger prints or posters viewed from a distance. All sizes are in inches; multiply centimetres by 0.3937 to convert. Inputs must be positive, and zero print size is rejected to avoid division by zero.

Aim for 300 DPI for photo-quality prints held at normal viewing distance. 150 DPI is acceptable for posters and large prints viewed from farther away.

Only up to a point. Beyond about 300 DPI most eyes cannot resolve extra detail, so very high DPI mainly increases file size without a visible improvement.

This tool works in inches. Convert by dividing centimetres by 2.54 (1 inch = 2.54 cm) before entering the print size.
