mL to lbs Calculator — Millilitres to Pounds

Convert a volume in millilitres (mL) to mass in pounds (lb): choose your substance from the preset list — water, milk, oil, honey and more — or enter a custom density to get the mass in pounds, ounces, grams and kilograms.

Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Mass (lb) = Volume (mL) × Density (g/mL) ÷ 453.592. Water (1 g/mL): 100 mL ≈ 0.220 lb. Honey (≈1.42 g/mL): 100 mL ≈ 0.313 lb. Ethanol (0.789 g/mL): 100 mL ≈ 0.174 lb. Select a substance or enter a custom density to convert any liquid.

Formula
Mass (lb) = Volume (mL) × Density (g/mL) ÷ 453.592 • 1 lb = 453.592 g
How this is calculated

Millilitres are a unit of volume; pounds are a unit of mass. Converting between them requires the density of the liquid: mass = volume × density. The density is expressed in g/mL (equivalently g/cm³ or kg/L), so the formula first gives a mass in grams, then divides by 453.592 to convert to pounds (avoirdupois, the system used in the US and UK for everyday weights).

For water at approximately 20 °C, density ≈ 1.000 g/mL. That means 453.592 mL of water weighs almost exactly 1 pound. A US pint of water (473 mL) weighs about 1.043 lb. For heavier liquids like honey (≈1.42 g/mL), the same volume weighs proportionally more; for lighter liquids like ethanol (0.789 g/mL) or gasoline (≈0.737 g/mL), less.

All preset densities are reference values at approximately 20 °C and standard atmospheric pressure. Density changes slightly with temperature — for example, water at 4 °C (maximum density) is 1.0000 g/mL versus 0.9982 g/mL at 20 °C. For most everyday cooking, chemistry or shipping calculations this difference is negligible. If you need higher precision, obtain the density at your actual temperature from a traceable reference.

Frequently asked questions

100 mL of water weighs approximately 0.2205 lb (about 3.527 oz), because water has a density of 1.000 g/mL and 1 lb = 453.592 g. So 100 g ÷ 453.592 = 0.2205 lb.

No. The conversion depends on the density of the liquid. Water, milk, honey, oil and alcohol all have different densities and will give different masses for the same volume. Always select the correct substance or enter a custom density.

Fluid ounces (fl oz) measure volume — 1 US fl oz = 29.574 mL. Ounces (oz) in this calculator are weight ounces (avoirdupois), where 1 oz = 28.350 g. For water, 1 fl oz ≈ 1.043 oz by weight because water density ≈ 1.000 g/mL but there are 28.350 g per weight-oz vs 29.574 mL per fl oz.
