How does this calculator work?
Hourly rate = Annual salary ÷ (Hours/week × Weeks/year). A $50,000 salary at 40 h/week for 52 weeks equals $24.04/hour. Enter your actual hours — not a nominal 40 — to see the true rate when comparing a salary to a freelance or contract quote.
Formula
How this is calculated
The calculator first converts whatever pay period you enter into an annual salary equivalent — multiplying monthly pay by 12, weekly by the number of working weeks, or daily by working days — then divides by the total hours worked per year (hours per week × weeks worked). This gives the true hourly equivalent regardless of how your employer quotes pay.
Hours per week and weeks per year matter enormously. A $60,000 salary worked 35 hours/week yields $33.00/hour; the same salary at 50 hours/week gives only $23.08/hour. Using the actual hours you work — not a nominal 40 — gives the honest rate, which is useful when comparing a salaried role to a contract or freelance rate.
The assumptions here are that pay is uniform across all weeks (no variable bonus or overtime premium) and that unpaid leave reduces weeks worked. If you receive irregular bonuses, treat them as separate income.
Frequently asked questions
Divide your annual salary by the total hours you work in a year. Total hours = hours per week × weeks worked. For a standard 40 h/week, 52-week year that is 2,080 hours, so $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25/hour.
Yes, if you are a salaried employee paid during vacation. Your annual salary already covers those weeks. Only reduce weeks if you take unpaid leave, or if you are comparing to a contractor rate where you only earn when working.
Salaried employees often work more than the nominal hours in their contract (unpaid overtime). Entering your actual hours gives the real effective rate — often noticeably lower than the headline figure.
