How does this calculator work?
Required daily pace = (goal − words written) / days remaining. For the standard 50,000-word / 30-day NaNoWriMo that is 1,667 words/day from day one. Enter your current progress and days left to get the adjusted pace, your ahead/behind status, and a projected final total at your current speed.
Formula
How this is calculated
National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) challenges participants to write 50,000 words during November (30 days), equivalent to a target pace of about 1,667 words per day. The calculator divides your remaining word count by your remaining days to give the adjusted daily target — if you have fallen behind, this number rises; if you are ahead, it falls.
Your current pace is the average you have achieved so far (words written divided by elapsed days). The projected total extrapolates that pace through the end of the challenge — if the projected total exceeds your goal, you are on track; if it falls short, you need to accelerate. The ahead/behind figure shows how many words above or below the uniform-pace schedule you currently are.
The calculator works for any writing challenge, not just NaNoWriMo — adjust the goal and total days for Camp NaNoWriMo, 100-Day Book, or a personal deadline. Note that this is a simple linear model: it assumes a steady daily output with no rest days, so build in a buffer if you plan to take days off.
Frequently asked questions
The classic NaNoWriMo goal is 50,000 words in 30 days, which works out to 1,667 words per day (rounded up). Many writers aim for 1,700–2,000 per day to build a buffer for off days.
The "Ahead / behind target" stat shows exactly how many words behind the uniform-pace schedule you are. The "Required daily pace" then tells you the words-per-day needed to finish on time from today — it automatically accounts for the deficit.
Yes — change the goal and total days for Camp NaNoWriMo (April/July, customisable goal), a personal deadline, or any timed writing sprint. The maths is the same regardless of the timeframe.
