How does this calculator work?
PPI equals pixel count along one axis divided by the physical length of that axis in inches. Dot pitch is 25.4 divided by PPI. At a normal viewing distance, around 300 PPI appears retina-sharp for handheld devices; desktop monitors typically fall between 90 and 160 PPI.

How this is calculated
Pixels per inch (PPI) measures how tightly packed the pixels are along one physical dimension of a display. To calculate it, divide the pixel count along that dimension by the corresponding physical size in inches: PPI = pixels / size. For example, a monitor with 1920 pixels across a 23.8-inch width has 1920 / 23.8 ≈ 81 PPI. The dot pitch is the inverse: how many millimetres separate adjacent pixel centres — lower is sharper.
In the reverse mode you can find how many pixels occupy a physical length at a given PPI, which is useful when designing UI elements or checking whether a design asset will render at the right size on a specific display. For example, at 96 PPI, a 15.6-inch screen has 96 × 15.6 = 1497.6 pixels along that dimension.
As a rough quality guide: most desktop monitors fall between 90 and 160 PPI; laptops commonly run 150–230 PPI; smartphones often exceed 300 PPI (the approximate "retina" threshold where individual pixels are indistinguishable to the naked eye at normal viewing distance). The retina threshold scales with distance — a TV viewed from 3 metres can appear sharp at 40 PPI.
Frequently asked questions
PPI (pixels per inch) measures physical pixel density on a screen. DPI (dots per inch) originally referred to printer output — how many ink dots a printer places per inch. In common usage the terms are often interchanged for screens, but they are technically distinct.
Measure the screen with a ruler (not the bezel — measure only the active display area) or look up the monitor's spec sheet which lists the viewable width and height separately from the diagonal.
A display around 100–150 PPI is adequate for most photo editing at a typical 60–80 cm viewing distance. Higher PPI (200+) reduces pixel visibility and improves colour grading accuracy, but sharpness perception depends more on panel quality and calibration than raw PPI alone.
