How this is calculated

A digital image is measured in pixels; a print is measured in inches or centimetres. The bridge between them is the resolution — dots per inch (DPI), which says how many pixels are mapped to each inch of print area. Dividing the pixel width by the DPI gives the print width in inches; the same applies to height. For example, a 4032 × 3024 pixel photo at 300 DPI prints 13.44 × 10.08 inches (34.1 × 25.6 cm) — a slightly oversized A4 sheet.

As a quality guide, 300 DPI is the standard for photo-quality inkjet and offset printing; at 300 DPI individual dots are invisible to the naked eye. At 150 DPI the image is still acceptable for larger prints (posters, banners) viewed from a distance of at least 1–2 metres. Below 100 DPI pixel artifacts become visible at normal viewing distances. Note that changing the DPI does not alter the pixel data in the file — it only changes the physical scale at which those pixels are rendered.

To enlarge a print without reducing DPI you need more pixels; either shoot at a higher camera resolution or upscale the image with a photo editing application before printing. This calculator shows the maximum quality print you can make from the existing pixel count at a chosen DPI.

Frequently asked questions

At 300 DPI you need 2400 × 3000 pixels (7.2 MP). At 200 DPI you need 1600 × 2000 pixels. Most modern smartphones produce 12 MP or more, comfortably covering a 300-DPI 8 × 10 at full resolution.

The DPI tag in a file is just metadata. What matters is the actual pixel count. A 72-DPI image with 4000 pixels wide will still print sharp at 300 DPI if the physical width is 4000 / 300 ≈ 13.3 inches. Use this calculator with your actual pixel count and target DPI to see the real print size.

Divide centimetres by 2.54 (there are exactly 2.54 cm per inch). For example, A4 paper is 21 × 29.7 cm = 8.27 × 11.69 inches. The calculator shows both units automatically.
