How does this calculator work?
Pixels to inches: divide the pixel count by the DPI. At 96 DPI, 960 px = 10 in; at 300 DPI, 3 000 px = 10 in. Multiply inches by 2.54 for centimetres, by 25.4 for millimetres. Use 96 DPI for screen/web layouts and 300 DPI for photo-quality print.

How this is calculated
A pixel is a dimensionless unit — it has no fixed physical size on its own. The physical size of a pixel-measured length depends entirely on the resolution: how many pixels are packed into each inch (DPI or PPI). Dividing the pixel count by the DPI gives the physical size in inches: size (in) = pixels / DPI. From there, multiplying by 2.54 converts to centimetres and multiplying again by 10 gives millimetres.
Common DPI values: 96 DPI is the historical standard for Windows screens and web browsers (so a web image that is 960 px wide fills exactly 10 inches on a 96-DPI monitor). 72 DPI is the traditional Mac and print-prepress standard. Photo printers typically output at 300–600 DPI, meaning a 3000 px wide image fills 10 inches at 300 DPI. Graphic design tools such as Illustrator and Photoshop let you set the document DPI; matching the converter's DPI to your document's DPI gives consistent results.
Typographic points (1 pt = 1/72 inch) are also shown — 72 points per inch is the PostScript standard, so a 72 px object at 72 DPI equals 72 pt = 1 inch. All results assume a uniform rectangular pixel and a constant DPI across the full dimension.
Frequently asked questions
Web browsers historically use 96 DPI on Windows and 72 DPI on older Macs. Modern high-DPI (Retina) screens use 144 or 192 effective DPI, but CSS pixels still resolve at 96 DPI by default (the browser scales automatically). Use 96 DPI as the baseline for CSS/HTML layout calculations.
300 DPI is the standard for photo-quality inkjet and offset printing. 150 DPI is acceptable for large-format posters viewed from a distance. Laser printers and high-end presses may use 600 DPI or more for fine text and line art.
DPI is a metadata tag telling the printer or display how large each pixel should appear. It does not change the actual pixel data in the file. A 3000 px image at 300 DPI prints 10 inches wide; at 150 DPI the same file prints 20 inches wide — more pixels spread over more physical space, at lower apparent sharpness.
