Quick answer

How does this calculator work?

Multiply hourly rate by regular hours for base pay, then by (multiplier × OT hours) for overtime. Sum both for weekly total; multiply by weeks worked for annual pay. The standard overtime multiplier is 1.5× in most countries — double-check your contract.

Formula
Weekly pay = (rate × regular hrs) + (rate × OT multiplier × OT hrs) • Annual = weekly × weeks
How this is calculated

Most employment laws require that hours worked beyond a standard threshold — commonly 40 hours per week in the US, or 48 hours averaged over 17 weeks under the EU Working Time Directive — be compensated at a premium rate. The most widespread multiplier is 1.5× (time and a half), though double time (2×) applies in some industries, collective agreements or for public holidays.

The calculator computes your weekly pay by adding regular earnings (hourly rate × regular hours) to overtime earnings (hourly rate × overtime multiplier × overtime hours). Multiplying by the number of weeks you actually work gives annual totals for both components. The effective hourly rate divides total weekly pay by total hours worked, giving your blended average rate — useful when comparing two job offers with different overtime structures.

This model assumes the same overtime schedule every week. Real-world overtime varies week to week, and some jurisdictions (e.g. California) trigger overtime after 8 hours in a single day rather than 40 in a week. Tax and deductions are not included — use a paycheck or income-tax calculator for your net take-home pay.

Frequently asked questions

Check your employment contract or collective agreement. In the United States the FLSA requires at least 1.5× for non-exempt employees working over 40 hours per week. Some contracts pay 2× for overtime or holidays. If unsure, 1.5 is the most common starting point.

Overtime pay is ordinary earned income taxed at the same marginal rate as your regular wages. Because it raises your weekly or monthly gross, it may temporarily land in a higher withholding band, but your true annual effective rate is determined by total yearly income — not by any individual pay period.

Many salaried workers are exempt from overtime laws, but if you need to convert an annual salary to an hourly equivalent, divide by (weeks × regular hours per week), then use the result as the hourly rate in this calculator.
