Formel
How this is calculated
There are three distinct gallons in common use, each defined by a different volume. The US liquid gallon (≈ 3.785 L) is used for fuel, beverages and most everyday liquids in the United States. The Imperial gallon (≈ 4.546 L) is used in the United Kingdom, Canada and parts of the Caribbean — it is about 20 % larger than the US liquid gallon, which matters whenever comparing pump prices or recipes across those regions. The US dry gallon (≈ 4.405 L) is a legacy unit occasionally used for dry goods like grain.
All other volume units are derived from the gallon you select. Quarts, pints, cups and fluid ounces are defined by fixed ratios: 4 quarts per gallon, 8 pints, 16 cups and 128 US fluid ounces (or 160 Imperial fluid ounces). Litres and millilitres use the exact statutory definitions of each gallon. Cubic inches and cubic feet use the standard inch-to-centimetre conversion (1 in = 2.54 cm exactly).
A common source of confusion is fuel price comparisons between the US and UK: a UK pump price in pence per Imperial litre divided by 4.546 gives pence per Imperial gallon, while the US figure in cents per US gallon divided by 3.785 gives cents per US litre — the gallons are not the same size.
