How this is calculated

BPM (beats per minute) defines musical tempo by counting how many quarter-note beats occur in one minute. Because a minute has 60 000 milliseconds, the duration of a single beat is simply 60 000 ÷ BPM. All other standard note values are rational multiples of that beat: a whole note lasts four quarter notes, a half note lasts two, an eighth note half, and a sixteenth note one quarter. A standard 4/4 bar — four quarter-note beats — therefore equals four times the beat duration.

The Hz figure converts tempo into a frequency by dividing BPM by 60, giving beats per second. This lets musicians cross-reference tempo against audio or MIDI time-code, and is particularly useful when dialling a delay or reverb pedal: the quarter-note delay in milliseconds is 60 000 ÷ BPM, while the popular dotted-eighth-note delay (used in classic "edge" style) is 60 000 ÷ BPM × 0.75.

The Italian tempo markings — Grave, Largo, Larghetto, Adagio, Andante, Moderato, Allegro, Vivace, Presto, Prestissimo — are the traditional names composers write on scores. The BPM ranges shown here reflect the most widely accepted modern ranges; historical and editorial variations of a few BPM exist, so treat them as strong guidelines rather than exact boundaries.

Allegro is generally 120–156 BPM in modern usage, though some editions extend it from 120 to 168 BPM. It is among the most common tempo markings for fast, lively movements.

Divide 60 000 by the song BPM to get the quarter-note delay in milliseconds. For a dotted-eighth note delay (three-eighths of a beat), multiply the quarter-note value by 0.75.

Both measure "beats per minute" — the same 60 000 ÷ BPM formula applies to find the interval between heartbeats in milliseconds. A resting adult heart beats 60–100 BPM; well-trained athletes often see 40–60 BPM at rest.
