How this is calculated

When alcohol is metabolised in the liver, roughly 0.02–0.06% is converted to ethyl glucuronide (EtG) by glucuronidation — a pathway that conjugates ethanol to glucuronic acid, making it water-soluble and excreting it through the kidneys. Unlike ethanol itself (which clears in hours), EtG persists much longer. A standard urine immunoassay cutoff of 100 ng/mL is common in workplace and court-ordered testing; the 500 ng/mL cutoff is used when only heavy drinking is of concern.

Published research (Helander et al., Alcohol & Alcoholism; Hoiseth et al., Forensic Science International) consistently shows that after light consumption (1–2 standard drinks), EtG is detectable for approximately 24–48 hours; after moderate drinking (3–6 drinks), 48–80 hours; and after heavy or binge drinking (7+ drinks), up to 80–125 hours. This calculator normalises all drink sizes to US-equivalent drinks (14 g ethanol each) and uses a linear interpolation between these empirical anchors, capped at 125 hours.

Important limitations: individual variation is substantial (liver enzyme activity, hydration, BMI) and can shift the window by ±20–30%. Food intake, the speed of consumption, and individual glucuronidation capacity all influence the result. This calculator provides an educational estimate only — it cannot predict the outcome of an actual laboratory test.

Yes. Even a single standard drink can produce a positive EtG result at a 100 ng/mL cutoff for 24–48 hours. At the stricter 500 ng/mL cutoff, a single drink may clear faster — but EtG testing is designed to be sensitive, and even small amounts of alcohol are reliably detected.

Alcohol-containing products (mouthwash, hand sanitisers, some foods) can produce trace EtG, though typically at much lower concentrations. Forensic laboratories and courts are generally aware of this and may use higher cutoffs or request confirmation testing to distinguish incidental exposure from actual drinking.

EtG testing is highly sensitive and is one of the few biomarkers that can detect alcohol use days after the fact.
