CTR (%) = Clicks ÷ Impressions × 100. A 2% CTR means 2 clicks per 100 ad views. Benchmarks: 2–5% for search ads, 0.5–1.5% for social, 0.05–0.3% for display. Add ad cost to compute CPC (cost ÷ clicks) and CPM ((cost ÷ impressions) × 1,000) alongside your CTR.
Formule
How this is calculated
Click-Through Rate (CTR) is the most fundamental engagement metric in digital advertising: it tells you what fraction of the people who saw your ad actually clicked on it. The formula is CTR (%) = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100. A CTR of 2% means two users clicked for every 100 who saw the ad.
CTR benchmarks vary widely by channel and format. Search ads (Google, Bing) average 2–5% for competitive keywords because the ad appears immediately after a high-intent query. Display/banner ads average 0.05–0.3%; social-feed ads range from 0.5–1.5% across platforms. Email newsletter CTR is typically 2–5% of opens, which itself is only a fraction of recipients. Comparing CTR across channels without accounting for these differences is misleading — a 0.3% CTR is strong for display but weak for search.
CTR is often combined with other metrics. CPC (cost per click) = Total Cost ÷ Clicks; CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) = (Total Cost ÷ Impressions) × 1,000. A high CTR is valuable only when the clicks convert: use CPA (cost per acquisition) to measure whether the traffic is profitable. Quality Score in Google Ads partly depends on historical CTR relative to competitors on the same keywords, making CTR optimisation directly relevant to your ad auction competitiveness and cost efficiency.

It depends heavily on channel: 2–5% is typical for search ads, 0.5–1.5% for social, and 0.05–0.3% for display. Compare your CTR against the same channel and ad format — not across channels.
Write compelling headlines and calls-to-action, tighten keyword-to-ad relevance, use ad extensions (callouts, sitelinks), and A/B test creatives. Also check audience targeting — showing an ad to a less relevant audience predictably lowers CTR.
Not necessarily. A sensationalist headline may drive high CTR but low conversion rate, raising CPA. Always pair CTR with post-click metrics like conversion rate and CPA to judge true campaign performance.
