A quilt needs fabric for the top (blocks), backing (quilt + 8 in margin), and binding. Cut block size = finished size + 2 × seam allowance. Strips needed = ceil(blocks ÷ pieces-per-width); yardage = strips × cut size ÷ 36, then add waste %. Typically budget 10% extra for cutting errors and use 42-in usable width.

How this is calculated
The calculator begins with the finished quilt dimensions and divides by the finished block size (rounding up) to get the number of blocks across and down. Multiplying these gives the total block count. Each block is cut from fabric at the finished size plus twice the seam allowance on each axis — for a 6-inch finished block with a ¼-inch seam, each cut square is 6.5 × 6.5 inches.
For each fabric in the block, the calculator determines how many pieces can be cut from one strip across the fabric width, then how many strips are needed to fill all blocks with that fabric. Strip count × cut size gives the raw inches needed; dividing by 36 converts to yards. A waste factor (default 10%) is added for inevitable off-cuts, bias stretch and cutting errors. The per-fabric yardage is multiplied by the number of fabrics to give the total top yardage.
Backing yardage assumes 4 extra inches on each side for floating the quilt in a frame (a common longarm requirement), then calculates how many widths of fabric are needed to cover the backing width and how many yards of each width length are required. Binding yardage is based on a 2.5-inch-wide continuous binding strip cut on the straight grain — one of the most common methods. All figures use the same waste factor. Because block designs, sashing, borders and particular piecing patterns can change yardage significantly, treat results as close estimates and add a buffer when in doubt.

This calculator models a simple patchwork of identical blocks. Patterns with sashing (strips between blocks), borders, or complex multi-piece blocks will use different amounts. Always check your pattern's own cutting instructions when available — use this calculator as a sanity check or for planning your own design.
The default 10% waste allowance covers typical cutting errors. If you are new to quilting, working with large prints that require fussy cutting, or the blocks involve bias seams, increase it to 15–20%. It is always better to have a little left over than to run short.
Quilting conventionally uses a ¼-inch (0.25 in) seam allowance. This is narrower than garment sewing (⅝ in). Some patterns specify a scant ¼ inch (slightly under 0.25 in) to account for the thread and fold taking a little of the seam. Enter 0.25 unless your pattern states otherwise.
