Enter θ in degrees or radians to get sin(θ) — the y-coordinate on the unit circle or opposite/hypotenuse in a right triangle. cos, tan, and cot are derived from the same angle. sin is always in [−1, 1] and repeats every 360° (2π rad).

How this is calculated

The sine of an angle θ is the y-coordinate of the point where the terminal ray meets the unit circle. For a right triangle it equals opposite ÷ hypotenuse. The calculator converts degree input to radians via rad = θ × π/180 before calling the standard floating-point sine function.

All four common trigonometric ratios — sin, cos, tan, and cot — are derived from the same angle. Cosine is the x-coordinate on the unit circle (adjacent ÷ hypotenuse), tangent is sin ÷ cos (opposite ÷ adjacent), and cotangent is the reciprocal 1 ÷ tan = cos ÷ sin. Where tan or cot would be undefined — at 90°, 270° etc. for tan, and at 0°, 180° etc. for cot — the result is displayed as ∞ (undefined).

Precision is limited by IEEE 754 double-precision floating point (~15 significant digits). For angles very close to multiples of π the result may differ from the exact zero by a tiny rounding error (e.g. sin(180°) ≈ 1.2×10⁻¹⁶ rather than 0).

sin(30°) = 0.5 exactly. In a 30-60-90 triangle the side opposite the 30° angle is exactly half the hypotenuse, which corresponds to the y-coordinate 0.5 on the unit circle.

Multiply by π/180. So 90° = π/2 ≈ 1.5708 rad and 360° = 2π ≈ 6.2832 rad. This calculator accepts both — switch the unit selector to skip manual conversion.

sin(θ) always lies in [−1, 1]. It reaches +1 at 90° (π/2 rad), 0 at 0° and 180°, and −1 at 270° (3π/2 rad). The function is periodic with period 360° (2π rad).
