Sec Calculator — Secant of an Angle
The secant function sec(θ) = 1 / cos(θ) is the reciprocal of cosine. Enter an angle in degrees or radians to get sec(θ) along with all five other trig function values.
Angle unit
Secant = 1 / cos(θ) — reciprocal of cosine
- 1
Convert to radians
θ = 60 × π ÷ 180 = 1,047198 - 2
Compute cos(θ)
cos(1,047198) = 0,5 - 3
sec(θ) = 1 ÷ cos(θ)
1 ÷ 0,5 = 2Secant is the reciprocal of cosine.
Kako deluje ta kalkulator?
sec(θ) = 1 / cos(θ). It is undefined at 90°, 270°, and every odd multiple of π/2. Range is (−∞, −1] ∪ [1, +∞), period is 360°. Common exact values: sec(0°) = 1, sec(30°) = 2√3/3, sec(45°) = √2, sec(60°) = 2.
Formula
How this is calculated
The six trigonometric functions come in three reciprocal pairs: sin/csc, cos/sec, and tan/cot. The secant is simply 1 divided by the cosine: sec(θ) = 1 / cos(θ). When cos(θ) is close to 1, sec(θ) is also close to 1; when cos(θ) approaches 0 (at 90°, 270°, etc.), sec(θ) tends to ±∞ — it is undefined at those exact angles.
The range of the secant function is (−∞, −1] ∪ [1, +∞): it can never take a value strictly between −1 and 1. The period is 360° (2π rad), the same as cosine. The secant function is even — sec(−θ) = sec(θ) — because cosine is even. Common exact values: sec(0°) = 1, sec(60°) = 2, sec(45°) = √2 ≈ 1.4142, sec(30°) = 2/√3 ≈ 1.1547.
Input in degrees or radians: the calculator converts between the two automatically. For any angle outside [0°, 360°) the result is the same as for the equivalent angle in that range, because the trig functions are periodic. The calculator also displays sin, cos, tan, csc, and cot at the same angle, and flags which are undefined at the chosen angle.
Pogosta vprašanja
sec(θ) = 1/cos(θ) is undefined whenever cos(θ) = 0, which happens at θ = 90°, 270°, and every 180° thereafter (i.e., θ = 90° + n·180° for any integer n). In radians, that is θ = π/2 + n·π.
They are the reciprocal trig functions: sec = 1/cos, csc = 1/sin, cot = 1/tan = cos/sin. They appear frequently in calculus (the derivative of tan is sec², and the derivative of cot is −csc²) and in physics and engineering.
Calculate cos(θ) first, then take its reciprocal: sec(θ) = 1 ÷ cos(θ). Most scientific calculators have a cos key but no sec key — press cos, then use the 1/x or x⁻¹ key.
