Range = max − min. Enter your data set and the calculator finds the range (total spread), mid-range (average of the two extremes), mean, and count — with a number line showing exactly where the minimum and maximum fall.

How this is calculated
The range is the simplest measure of spread in a data set: subtract the smallest value from the largest. It tells you the total extent of the data in one number — a range of 38 means your values span 38 units from bottom to top. It is quick and intuitive but highly sensitive to outliers; a single unusually large or small value can inflate the range dramatically, making it less representative of the typical spread.
The mid-range is the arithmetic average of just the two extremes: (max + min) / 2. It is the centre of the range, not the same as the mean (which uses all values) or the median (which finds the physical middle of the sorted list). Together these three measures give a quick picture of where the data sits and how wide it spreads.

No. Range is always ≥ 0. It equals zero only when all values in the data set are identical (max = min). The range formula subtracts the smaller value from the larger, so the result is always non-negative.
It is a useful first look at spread but can be misleading if outliers are present. For example, 1, 5, 5, 5, 5, 100 has a range of 99, yet nearly all the data is clustered around 5. Standard deviation or IQR give a more stable picture in such cases.
