How this is calculated

DPMO (Defects Per Million Opportunities) is the standard metric in Six Sigma quality management for comparing process performance on a common scale. An "opportunity" is any point in a process where a defect could occur. Total opportunities equal the number of units multiplied by the opportunities per unit. DPMO is then defects divided by total opportunities, scaled to one million: DPMO = (D ÷ (U × O)) × 1,000,000.

The Six Sigma level (σ) converts DPMO to a standard normal score using the inverse normal CDF plus the conventional ±1.5σ long-term shift: sigma = Φ⁻¹(1 − DPMO/1,000,000) + 1.5. This shift accounts for the fact that a real process mean drifts over time. The formula links DPMO to how many standard deviations the process mean sits from the nearest specification limit: a Six Sigma process produces at most 3.4 DPMO.

Process yield is the percentage of defect-free opportunities: yield = (1 − DPMO/1,000,000) × 100%. The sigma-level gauge runs from 0 (very poor) to 6 (world-class). Typical manufacturing operates at 3–4σ; highly reliable industries (aerospace, medical devices) target 5–6σ.
