Because c² is about 8.99 × 10¹⁶ J/kg, even a small mass stores an enormous energy: 1 gram stores roughly 9 × 10¹³ J, equivalent to about 21 kilotons of TNT. The calculator converts your input to kilograms using exact factors (1 g = 10⁻³ kg; 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg; 1 oz = 0.02834952 kg), multiplies by c² to get the result in joules, then converts to kilowatt-hours (1 kWh = 3.6 × 10⁶ J), tons of TNT (1 ton = 4.184 × 10⁹ J) and Hiroshima bomb equivalents (≈ 6.3 × 10¹³ J).
